Picture This says this is purple-leaved willow herb, epilobium coloratum. Do you agree? It has come up as a weed in my garden in Bennington County, VT.

    Answer

Dear Carolyn, good morning. You certainly have photographed a species of Epilobium (willow-herb), but it is not possible to tell you which species you have gathered from the images provided. Epilobium ciliatum (fringed willow-herb) is much more common in New England and looks macroscopically like E. coloratum. I would need to see flower buds and the color of the hairs on the seeds to give you a confident answer (something that Picture This needs as well). Best wishes.
