Question
Hello again, I inadvertently hit the "Submit" rather than the "Upload Image" button. Here are the accompanying images. Sorry. Location: Lincoln, RI. Photos taken in July. If you could point me in the right direction, I'll try and sort out who's who. Much appreciated. Thanks.
Answer
Dear sldz22, if possible, it will be easier to deal with each species one at a time so that we don't get confused which ones I'm trying to identify as you have at least four species presented in the array of images. Also, when possible, you will want to take images of both surfaces of the leaves--because without images of the lower surface, I can't see sori, hairs, scales, and other features that are necessary for identification. In order, the species appear to be Amauropelta novaboracensis (New York fern), Onoclea sensibilis (sensitive fern), Osmundastrum cinnamomeum (cinnamon fern), and Polypodium virgianum (rock polypody). Identification tip for the last species, it is the oblong blade shape that is really indicative of this species (P. appalachianum has a more triangular blade shape). Best wishes.
