  • Question

I am looking to plant a Leyland Cypress in the backyard on a 12-foot incline above a sometimes wet area. I just noticed crawdad mounds on the incline. Would this indicate the area is too wet for Leyland Cypress?

    Answer

Dear wayneatwood, good morning. Leyland cypress (Cuprocyparis X leylandii) is a tree that does best on well-drained soils. As I understand, crayfish mounds are built where they have access to mud (it can't be too wet, but it must be near a low area, wetland, or shoreline). You might want to move your planting location a bit to be sure the soil is not too wet. Hopefully this will only require a small adjustment. Best wishes.
