Hello, Could this be white goldenrod (Solidago bicolor?) Or perhaps some kind of aster? Found on the trail in Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy, Providence, RI Thanks.

    Answer

Dear sldz22, yes, this is Solidago bicolor, but it is a compact, slightly stunted version of this fall-flowering goldenrod. The white rays distinguish this species, along with the basally disposed leaves and long hairs on the stem.
