Question: What is the difference between repens and stolonifera? They seem to both refer to creeping plants.

  • Question

What is the difference between repens and stolonifera? They seem to both refer to creeping plants.

    Answer

Repens is a term that means repent, as in bent to the ground and trailing over it. Stolonifera, in the strict sense, would refer to the possession of horizontal, above ground stems that root at the nodes. A repent plant may not have specialized stolons, and an otherwise upright plant may have stolons. They are not exactly the same because one refers to a habit of the stem (repens) and one refers to a specialized structure (stolonifera). Best wishes.
