Question
Hi there, trying to determine if these grasses in my yard in Somerville, on Spring Hill, are native or not. I'll do them in two groups. The first seems to be a type of bristle grass, but I'm not sure if it's Knotroot, Green Bristlegrass, or something else.
Answer
Dear samgechter, good morning. Given that I need to see micromorphological characters to make a confident determination, please understand that what I'm providing here is an educated guess. From what I can see, there appear to be an abundance of bristles in the inflorescence, suggesting that each spikelet is subtended by 4 or more bristles. This means the plant is likely Setaria pumila (yellow foxtail), a non-native species. All but one species in this genus is non-native within New England. Best wishes.
