Wondering about this tree growing in former farm field on the edge of a wetland. Stands roughly 30-40 feet tall out of a hedge, so I can't get any photos except of the lower bark. (The different textures of the bark are what are confusing me, as seen in second photo)

    Answer

Dear AndyT, good afternoon. I can't identify the tree with confidence. The bark suggests Prunus serotina (black cherry), but I would need to see more of the tree to know. Perhaps you could get some leaves that fall this season so I could see the outline of the blades. Best wishes.
