Hello, In the absence of flowers, is it possible to tell who's living along the edge of the brook---Caltha palustris or Ficaria verna? Found in Lincoln Ri. Thanks

    Answer

Dear sldz22, most of the leaves you have photographed belong to a species of Ranunculus (crowfoot) with dimorphic leaves (e.g., Ranunculus abortivus complex). These are native plants. The first image you posted in the series with almost perfectly circular leaves I do not recognize from that image. If it is Caltha palustris it is not typical. The leaf color, venation, and margin are all suggesting another identification. But, to one of your questions--none of the images are a species of Ficaria. Best wishes.
