Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to determine the species of this Blackberry plant. It is widespread on a coastal island in Salem Sound, MA. All photos were taken 7/20 EXCEPT the flower photo. The flower photo was taken in 2007. I have it ID'd as Rubus allegheniensis. I strongly believe the photos from 2020 and the flower photo of 2007 are from the same species of plant. Thank you very much for your expertise! SueLB

    Answer

Dear SueLB, good afternoon. I can't tell you for certain because I'm unable to view stalked glands along the axis of the inflorescence (there isn't an image close enough to allow me to do that). The image is consistent with Rubus allegheniensis, but it is also consistent with species in the section Arguti (e.g., Rubus pensylvanicus, Rubus frondosus). While I can't tell you the species for certain, I do hope this is helpful and might allow you to narrow it down.
