small everygreen about 1ft high, moist woods in Pioneer valley. I was thinking yew, but it has a very distinctive white stripe on the *top* of the needles, which I can't find mentioned.

Dear markfanty, you have photographed a species of Juniperus (juniper). It is likely Juniperus communis (common juniper), which has a obvious stomatal band on the adaxial (upper) surface of the leaves.
