This was growing in the yard. I have no idea what it is. It has thorns on the stem and on it leaves. Located in Cottage Grove, Oregon.

I can't identify your plant with confidence because I do not have deep familiarity with plants on the western side of the continent (Go Botany is a website dedicated to wild plants of New England). That written, the plants looks like a species of Solanum (nighthade). There are several species with prickles on the stems and leaves as you have photographed. I would start there with your search for a name.
