Facts

Northern bedstraw is native and widespread in North America. In New England it is found in fens, wet meadows, fields and woodlands in areas where calcium-rich bedrock makes for soils that are neutral or high in pH. The name "bedstraw" refers to the use of this plant and related species as fragrant stuffing for mattresses. The juice of young plants can be applied to the skin to ease the pain of sunburn or insect bites.

Our subspecies of this plant differs from the typical European one in that it shows larger corollas, anthers, and fruits, more densely pubescent nodes, and differences in the shapes of bracts and inflorescences. This combined with the differences in chromosome number support treating our plants as distinct (Iltis 1957).
