Facts
Plains lovegrass is a native grass throughout most of the southern U. S. south to Costa Rica. In New England, it has been collected from dry, disturbed sites in Massachusetts and Maine, and these highly disjunct populations may have been introduced. In the southwest, this grass is declining due to heavy grazing. Like many grasses, this species employs the C4 pathway of photosynthesis, which means it can drink up carbon quite rapidly and not lose water -- a handy adaptation for its native dry, warm habitats.
