Facts
Horse yellowhead (also known as elecampane) is native to Europe and introduced in Asia and North America. It has long been used medicinally for chest infections and chronic chest problems such as bronchitis and bronchial asthma. It was also taken for digestive problems and used to counter infections. Roman philosopher and naturalist Pliny (AD 23-79) said about horse yellowhead, "Let no day pass without eating some of the roots to help digestion, and to expel melancholy."

- lower leaf blades broad-ovate to nearly orbicular, cordate at the base, and capitula with usually 20-40 ray flowers or more in some cultivated forms (vs. I. helenium, with lower leaf blades +/- elliptic, tapering at the base, and capitula with usually 50-100 ray flowers).
- Inula salicina:
- basal and lower stem leaves 1.2–2 cm broad, rays 10–15 mm long, and disk corollas 5–7 mm long (vs. I. helenium, with basal and lower stem leaves 10–20 cm broad, rays mostly 20–30 mm long, and disk corollas 7–11 mm long).
