Native Plant Trust: Go Botany Discover thousands of New England plants

Genus: Populus — poplar

Species of Populus have two kinds of leaves: those that emerge from the overwintered bud, called first leaves, and those produced later in the season at the ends of the branches, called new leaves. Look at both types when possible, because they vary in size, shape, and number of teeth on the leaf edge. The key does not use the large leaves produced on vigorous shoots. Reference: Eckenwalder (2010).
