Genus: Dichanthelium — rosette-panicgrass

Some floras treat the species in this genus within the genus Panicum, but recent research has shown that they should be placed in Dichanthelium (Aliscioni et al. 2003, Zuloaga et al. 2006). Many species of Dichanthelium flower twice during the growing season. In early to mid-summer, the first panicle is produced at the top of the main stem, and it contains wind-pollinated florets. Later in the season, secondary panicles grow, often enclosed within leaf sheaths; these have flowers that do not open and that are self-pollinated. You should look at the earlier-produced panicles when using this key. Reference: Freckmann and Lelong (2003).
