  • 1a. Leaf blades firm, 3–7 (–10) ×2–5 (–5.5) cm, obtuse to acute at the apex, with 7–12 
well-developed, rounded to bluntly pointed teeth per margin, 4 or more times as long as 
the associated petiole; petioles 1–15 (–20) mm long (rarely lacking altogether); roots 
0.8–1 (–1.5) mm thick; capitula with 10–19 flowers
  • 1b. Leaf blades herbaceous, (5–) 6–18 ×3–11 (–12) cm, short-acuminate to acuminate at 
the apex, with 9–25 well-developed, pointed teeth per margin, 1.5–5 times as long as the 
petiole; petioles of principal leaves 20–80 mm long; roots 0.3–0.8 (–1) mm thick; capitula 
with (9–) 12–25 flowers
