Facts
True to its common name, English holly is native to Britain and much of Europe. It is a hardy shrub with leathery, spiny leaves, and can tolerate a range of soils and even salty habitats. Although the leaves and roots have been variously described as somewhat edible and medicinal (for coughs and fever), the plant contains toxic saponins. In late fall, the red berries contrast pleasingly with the deep green leaves, making it a popular choice for Christmas wreaths.
