Facts
The seeds of scratch bedstraw catch tightly to the fur of animals or to clothing. The leaves, when dried, were formerly used to stuff mattresses, hence the common name.

scratch bedstraw. Galium aparine L. var. echinospermum (Wallr.) Farw.; G. aparine ssp. spurium (L.) Simonkai; G. aparine L. var. vaillantii (DC.) Koch; G. spurium L.; G. spurium L. var. echinospermum (Wallr.) Hayek; G. spurium L. var. vaillantii (DC.) G. Beck; G. vaillantii DC. • CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT. Forests, forest fragments, fields and field edges, swamps, roadsides, waste areas. Two subspecies are sometimes recognized—ssp. aparine with green-white corollas 1.5–1.7 mm in diameter and uncinate-bristly schizocarps (2.8–) 3–4 (–5) mm wide exclusive of the hairs and ssp. spurium with green-yellow corollas 0.8–1.3 mm in diameter and glabrous or uncinate-bristly schizocarps 2–3 mm wide exclusive of the hairs. Preliminary herbarium surveys suggest that these two taxa are not discrete and supposed diagnostic characters appear mixed on some specimens. Until further study contributes to our understanding of local plants, this species is recognized broadly without subspecific entities.
