Facts
Stiff tickseed is native to the Great Plains and parts of the Midwest and South, but it is not native to New England, and has only been collected in Massachusetts. Its opposite, basal leaves are divided into three to five narrow lobes, and it has large, striking yellow flowers.

- leaf blades trifurcating at the base, therefore the leaf blades definitely appearing sessile, with lanceolate to oval lobes mostly 12–25 mm wide, and internodes of stem usually short-pubescent (vs. C. palmata, with leaf blades trifurcating well above the base, therefore the blades appearing to be on a broadly winged petiole, with linear to narrow-oblong lobes 2–7 mm wide, and internodes of stem usually glabrous).
- Coreopsis tripteris:
- leaf blades borne on evident, narrow petioles that are clearly much narrower than the associated leaf lobes, outer involucral bracts 2-3 mm long, approximately 1/3 to 1/2 as long as the inner bracts, and reproductive stems 1-3 m tall (vs. C. palmata, with leaf blades sessile, though appearing to be borne on a broadly winged petiole of +/- similar width to the lateral lobes, outer involucral bracts 6-10 mm long, subequal in length to the inner bracts, and reproductive stems 0.3-1 m tall).
