Facts
Ash-leaved maple (also known as box elder) is named for its compound leaves that resemble ash leaves, unlike other members of the maples (Acer). It is a fast-growing, though short-lived, tree that can tolerate stressful growing conditions. This scrappy tree is very drought- and cold-resistant and is a common street tree and windbreak. Evening grosbeaks and other finches relish its seeds. Although not as sweet as that of sugar maple, its sap is sometimes used for making syrup.

This species is non-native in ME and RI, and is native, at least in part, to the other states in New England. Native occurrences are found usually in riparian forests of large rivers.
