Native Plant Trust: Go Botany Discover thousands of New England plants

Genus: Carya — hickory

To identify hickories, you must observe the color and number of scales on the terminal buds of the unfruiting branches, as well as the types of hairs on the leaves. When observing leaf hairs, you will need to distinguish between simple hairs and those that have multiple rays emerging from one point on the leaf surface. References: Manning (1950), Stone (1997).
