Genus: Bidens — beggar-ticks
Variation in the barbs at the tips of the seeds has been used in some floras to divide several species into varieties. However, variability can be seen within populations or even single plants , and so no varieties based only upon awn differences are recognized in this key. Bidens is closely related to Coreopsis.
