Plant of the day: Amelanchier arborea — downy servicberry
Downy shadbush gets its common name from the velvety, downy-hairy undersides of its leaves. The berries produced in early summer are eaten by over 40 species of birds and many mammals. The seeds benefit from being scarified during the digestion process.
