Facts

Glandular birch is very different from New England's more common birches. Its leaves are very small (0.5-3 cm) and its twigs are covered in large resin glands (hence the species name, "glandulosa." This diminutive birch is confined to alpine plateaus and ravines of the mountainous regions of New Hampshire and Maine, where it is listed as imperiled. Its low germination rate from short-lived seeds may contribute to its rarity; climate warming is likely to further endanger this plant. Its leaves, bark, and buds are important food sources for many northern animals, including moose, beaver, ptarmigan, and grouse.

glandular birch. ME, NH. Alpine plateaus, ravines, and snow bank communities. This species was once collected at ca. 485 m elevation in an open field on the slope of a large hill in Coos County, NH.
