Facts

Hawkweed oxtongue is native to Europe and Asia, and invasive in Africa, Australia and North America. It is listed as a State Noxious Weed in the State of Washington, and is found in disturbed areas in New England.

outer series of involucral bracts numbering 3-5, ovate to broad-lanceolate, mostly 3–5 mm wide, and cypsela body terminated by a slender beak nearly as long as or longer than the body proper (vs. P. hieracioides, with the outer series of involucral bracts numbering usually 13 or more, lanceolate to broad-linear, mostly 0.5–1.5 mm wide, and cypsela body apically narrowed but without a beak).
Sonchus arvensis:
stem leaves auriculate-clasping and pappus bristles not pinnately branched, 5-7 mm long (vs. P. hieracioides, with stem leaves sessile but not clasping and pappus bristles plumose, 8-14 mm long).
