This genus contains aquatic plants and only one species occurs in New England, where it was introduced. Its clover-shaped leaves float on the surface of water bodies and the plants are rooted in the substrate. It reproduces by spores, held in specialized structures called sporocarps. Reference: Johnson (1993).
