Species in the family Selaginellaceae are small, annual or perennial herbs; the perennial species may be evergreen. The stems are simple to abundantly forked. Leaves are scale-like, single-veined, and may have more than one shape on a single plant. The spore-bearing leaves are aggregated near the tips of branches into spore cones. The spores are of two sizes in this family (megaspores and microspores).
