Family: Hypoxidaceae — star-grass family
Species in the family Hypoxidaceae are perennial herbs with grasslike leaves that grow from an underground stem. We have only one genus and species in our region. The leaves are undivided, with parallel veins, are untoothed, and provided with white hairs. The flowers are arranged in clusters on a leafless stalk (a scape). The flowers have 6 tepals, are actinomorphic (radially symmetrical) and are yellow; the tepals attach above the ovary (i.e., the ovary is inferior) and are hairy on the outer/lower surfaces. There are 6 stamens. The fruit of our species is a dry capsule. Species in this family were formerly considered to belong to the Liliaceae.
