Members of this family in New England are woody plants with opposite, simple or compound leaves. The flowers are arranged in branching, many-flowered inflorescences called cymes. The flowers are flat and disc-like, actinomorphic (radially symmetrical), and 5-parted with the petals fused together at the base. They have 5 stamens and an ovary with a lobed stigma. Fruits of our species are fleshy, colorful, and 1- to several-seeded. New England's species were formerly placed in the Caprifoliaceae.
