  • 1a. Petiole, rachis, and abaxial surface of ultimate segments pubescent with short, curly 
hairs; leaflet stalks emerging at right angles to the rachis; ultimate segments of fertile leaves mostly 10–75 mm long; leaves hemidimorphic—the fertile leaves larger and with longer ultimate segments
  • 1b. Petiole and rachis glabrous or nearly so, the abaxial surface of ultimate segments 
glabrous except for occasional hair-like scales near the midrib; leaflet stalks ascending; ultimate segments of fertile leaves mostly 5–20 mm long; leaves essentially monomorphic
